Classic Beau upstages 'Admiral'
Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer

The front-running CLASSIC BEAU, offering odds of 7-1, survived a late challenge from the 4-5 favourite LORD ADMIRAL to win the inaugural running of the Impulse Jamaica 3-Y-O Sprint at Caymanas Park yesterday.

With a total purse of $850,000, the 1200-metre race marked the first race in the Impulse Energy Drink Series of three races in the last quarter.

CLASSIC BEAU, ridden by the 4.0kg claiming apprentice Jodeien Anderson for part-owner and trainer Richard Azan, made all. The dark bay colt by Western Classic out of She Knows Beau, responded to some heavy left-hand whipping after turning for home two lengths clear to stave off the fast-finishing LORD ADMIRAL by a length in a field of 13 native bred three-year-olds. KING'S LAW at 11-1 was third, heads on with well-backed PATARA (4-1).

Bred by part-owner Paul Chen, CLASSIC BEAU posted his first win from 11 starts this season.

Meanwhile, the vastly improved three-year-old gelding SPACE FURY could have earned himself an invitation to the November 14 Superstakes over 2000 metres after his easy victory in the Royal Dad Trophy supporting feature over 1820 metres.

Always prominent as YOJIMBO (9-2) made most from KOKOPELLI CAT, SPACE FURY was sent in chase from the half-mile. He went by YOJIMBO on the inside entering the straight to win by three lengths from the late kicking 9-1 shot GO ROBIN GO (badly outpaced), who got up on the line to snatch second from 5-2 chance POSEIDON. Seven ran.
