St George's, Manley win
Anthony Foster, Gleaner Writer

Last year's champions Excelsior were sent packing from the 2009 Pepsi/Digicel Walker Cup knockout competition after falling at the first hurdle, 2-1, to St George's College in yesterday's quarter-final feature at Constant Spring yesterday.

In the opening game, Norman Manley fought gallantly, coming from two goals down to tie the match and force extra time before eventually beating Waterford High 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.

PENALTY

Just when it looked as if the first half was going to end without a goal, Excelsior's Jerome Williams brought down top striker McKauly Tulloch, who had broken away in the area. Tulloch stepped up to put away the resulting penalty for a 1-0 lead.

As Excelsior's pushed for the equaliser, St George's hit them on the counter to seal the match with a second goal when Devon Evans scored at the 84th.

Excelsior never gave up and Nico Brett pulled back a consolation the 88th minute.

St George's assistant coach, Marcel Gayle, said: "We played a tactical and disciplined game ... we gave nothing away."

In the opening game, Oshane Greaves (26th) and Ricardo Davis (31st) put Waterford 2-0 up before Dean Phillips (71st) and substitute Lamar Thompson (78th) netted for Norman Manley.

sudden death

Branckley Robinson, Rashad Bent and Richard Davis scored penalties for Waterford, while Odel Palmer, Nico Reynolds, Neko Brooks and Romone McGregor responded for Norman Manley.

In sudden death, Waterford's Derron Britten and Roy Dunston and Dean Phillips of Norman Manley missed their kicks, but Dawayne Walters made Norman Manley's advance certain with the final kick.
