DOCTOR'S ADVICE - Not on the lips
  • Q. Doctor, I am a man in need of advice about an affair. I want to know why a girl would refuse to kiss me? I am 55 and married. My wife and I have been together for many years and we have several grown children. But I travel quite a lot on the job and, of course, I meet other women in the process.

A few months ago, I met a wonderful girl who lives on the other side of the island. I took her out for a drink. Soon we started sleeping together whenever I am in her town. I have to admit that I have fallen hopelessly in love with her and have even bought her a ring, but haven't given it to her yet.

We have fantastic sex together, but there is one odd thing. Although she seems to love having sex with me and has multiple orgasms, she will only let me have intercourse with her from the rear.

In other words, we are not kissing while we have sex. In fact, she will not allow me to kiss her on the lips at all. I find this very strange. She might allow me to 'brush' her cheeks with my lips. But she never ever accepts a kiss on the mouth. What is going on here, Doctor? I cannot understand her behaviour at all. By the way, I think she is around 19 years old.

    A. You think she is 19? Don't you know for sure? If you are right, that means you are almost three times her age. That is a large gap. Not many men and women manage to establish a successful long-term relationship when there is such a large difference in age.

As for her refusal to let you kiss her on the mouth, I have encountered this quite often in women. Usually, it indicates that the woman is unwilling to commit.

For instance, I understand that it is not uncommon for prostitutes to allow men almost every sexual activity, except kissing on the lips. A 'professional woman' may have intercourse and oral sex with a man for half the night, but will turn her head away if he tries to kiss her on the lips.

It seems as if she reserves that privilege for her husband or boyfriend. In the case of your young sweetheart, I feel pretty sure that she is refusing to kiss you on the lips because she just does not wish to commit to you as a long-term partner. So she allows you to have sex with her only in positions where you are not able to.

I do not believe this girl wants you to get divorced and marry her. The entire situation sounds quite crazy to me. I think you should consider the feelings of your poor wife. You have been together for many years. Does she love you? Do you still have feelings for her?

If the answer to either of these questions is yes, I think you really should try to keep that relationship going.

As for your young girlfriend, I think the sooner you forget about her, the better. There is very little hope for such a relationship. There might be a chance that all this playing around has exposed all three of you to a sexually transmitted infection. My advice would be to ensure that everybody gets tested. And I suggest that you make that the end of the affair.

  • Q. Doctor, I am 36 years old and I have a little 'thickening' in my right breast. I am not sure whether it is a lump. Can I just leave it alone for the moment and see what happens?

    A. No, I do not think that would be safe. If there is the slightest suspicion of a lump in your breast, you must see a doctor within a few days and have it checked out. This applies to all adult women who think they have a lump in their breast. However, I must stress that the risk of it being cancerous is low in young females, but starts to accelerate rapidly after the age of 30. Please do not delay.

  • Q. Doctor, I am a little worried about my morning erections. I know that these are an indication of a man's virility. My recollection is that when I was a teenager, I used to get one every morning. But now that I am in my 40s, it only happens around three times per week. Is there any danger that I am losing my nature?

    A. This is a good question, because the presence of morning erections does give at least some guide to a guy's general sexual health and to whether he is still producing a fair amount of testosterone.

However, I must stress that the incidence of morning erections varies and that some perfectly virile men do not report getting any.

As with so many topics about sex, the Americans have done very detailed scientific research on this matter. They have found that the average number of morning erections per week is as follows:

    Age group: Number per week:

  • 16-20 - 1.40

  • 21-25 - 1.41

  • 26-30 - 1.77

  • 31-35 - 2.05

  • 36-40 - 1.68

  • 41-45 - 1.47

  • 46-50 - 1.33

  • 51-55 - 1.29

  • 56-60 - 1.25

  • 61-65 - 1.18

  • 66-70 - 0.50

Scientifically minded readers may wonder why the highest figure for morning erections is the 31-35 age group, and NOT young men into their 20s.

I believe the reason for this that the younger men are more likely to be having a lot of sex during the evenings and nights. Therefore, they generally don't have enough left in the tank to cause an erection every morning.

Now in your case, your three morning erections per week is above average! So you have no reason to worry that you are losing your nature.

  • Q. I have missed a few of the Pills. Could I be pregnant?

    A. Yes. Please do a pregnancy test at the end of this pack.
