Marshall stands out
XAVIER MARSHALL turned in a fine allround performance, to spur Christopher Gayle's XI to a five-wicket victory over David Bernard Jr XI, in the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) practice match at the Elletson Road playing field yesterday.

Batting first, Bernard's XI posted 196 for nine off the allotted 50 overs. Gayle's XI replied with 199 for five off 26.2 overs.

The top batsmen struggled to score in the first half of the game. Joseph Palmer, batting at number six, topscored for Bernard's XI with an unbeaten 44 off 56 balls. Opener Damion Bryce (31 from 63 balls) and the established Danza Hyatt (32 off 61 balls) got good starts, but had great difficulty dispatching the bowling, much unlike late-order batters Nikita Miller (23 off 15) and Krishmar Santokie (13 n.o. off 10).

Most wickets

Marshall took most wickets, three for 36 off 10 overs, while Andrew Richardson snared two for 42 off nine. Though taking only one wicket, spinner Odean Brown was most economical, going for 19 runs in his 10-over spell. Gayle got one wicket for one run in the only over he bowled.

The latter's batsmen went about scoring in contrasting fashion, with Marshall (51 off 45, with two fours and four sixes) and Shawn Findley (58, with six sixes) hammering half centuries. Gayle chipped in with 29 off 16 balls, getting four fours and a six in the process.

All the bowlers went at six or more per over: Jerome Taylor (43 off 6.2), Daren Powell (47/6), Nikita Miller 26/3, Bernard Jr 36/6 and Santokie (36/5). Bernard, however, claimed two wickets.
