EDITORIAL - What the Government must do
Prime Minister Bruce Golding has begun, in a fashion, to put hard numbers to the Budget cut that will have to be made for Jamaica to struggle through this fiscal year. But as Mr Golding must know, and if he doesn't, we remind him, the government is still only into baby steps towards a long-term fix.

Lessons from Berlin
AS WE bask in the glory of the brilliant performance by our athletes in Berlin, many have been moved to reflect on the deeper meaning of these achievements. And it is not just a matter of the athletic performance, outstanding as these have been. What is even more striking to all, including people in Germany, are the fine personal qualities of our athletes.

Asafa's golden bronze
AFTER THE screaming for Bolt's magical run died down last Sunday, it started up again, even more raucously, when we realised that Asafa had taken the bronze. For me, Asafa's bronze is even more of a victory than Bolt's gold. He is finding himself again by letting go.

Recovery in bauxite dependent on China
MUCH HAS been said about the blow that has been dealt the Jamaican economy by the recent closure of several of the island's bauxite and alumina facilities. The focus has been on the loss of foreign-exchange earnings, which has followed the slump in production, given that the bauxite industry has been the second-largest source of exports.

A journey into happiness
MORE THAN a month ago, I was struck by an article with the bold headline 'Jamaica is the third-happiest nation on Earth'. The happiness ranking given to Jamaica was based on the New Economic Foundation (NEF) Happy Planet Index.
