KINGSTON, Jamaica:
A senior police officer charged with breaches of the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) Act has been convicted.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Albert Diah was charged in November last year with failure to comply with a lawful requirement of the Commission; and, obstructing the Commission in the exercise of functions under the INDECOM Act.

He now faces a fine of up to $3 million and or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years.

Diah is to be sentenced on November 20.

The DSP was charged after he reportedly failed to hand over firearms which were used by police personnel involved in a fatal shooting in Macca Tree, St Catherine to INDECOM's investigative staff.

INDECOM says Diah failed to comply with a lawful requirement of the Commission without lawful justification or excuse.

By so doing, it says, he obstructed the Commission in performing its investigative role.

This is the second INDECOM-related matter to be completed in the courts, and is also the Commission's second conviction.
