Motorists will be faced with major traffic changes in St Ann’s Bay as of Monday, November 3, in a move that the St Ann Parish Council says is geared at allowing smoother vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow in the St Ann capital.

One of the main changes is the reversal of a section of Main Street to a dual carriage way.

The changes are being implemented by the Council in conjunction with the Area Traffic Authority and have come against the background of concerns by the public about the continuing traffic congestion, caused to some extent by taxi operators.

Through consultation, prior to the decision being taken, input came from the Taxi Association, St Ann’s Bay Citizens Association, Jamaica Fire Brigade, the Police, National Works Agency, councillors and senior officers from the Parish Council.

The changes are as follows:

1) Main Street - Which now only accommodates one-way traffic will be opened to two-way traffic up to Church Street (from the St Ann’s Bay roundabout leading to the Cemetery and to the Courthouse.) (In other words, traffic coming from the hospital can now avoid the bypass and can travel along Main Street, (heading east) past the cemetery, past Rubis gas station, to the town centre and beyond.)

2) Main Street- from Church Street down to the intersection of Bravo Street will be accommodating one-way traffic flowing in an easterly direction. (In other words, no traffic will be allowed from Texaco gas station up to Church Street (beside the court house) as this section of Main Street will now be a one-way.

3) Harbour Street- The entire roadway will be turned into a one way, flowing in a westerly direction.

4) Wharf Street will be turned into a one-way heading north to south.

5) Market Street will be turned into a one-way heading south to north from the main street intersection at the town clock.

6) Bravo Street - One way from intersection at Main Street to Park Avenue heading in a northerly direction.
