JUTC gives another week before Smarter card use becomes mandatory for concession passengers
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has announced that for the rest of this week up to Sunday, September 7 it will will accept bus fare payment in cash from all passengers including people who pay concession fares.

Concession passengers were expected to start the mandatory use of smarter cards tomorrow.

JUTC managing director, Colin Campbell, said the decision to give the extra time to people to get their Smarter Cards was made as result of the large crowds turning up at the JUTC offices to get their cards.

But Campbell insists that there will be no further extension.

"After this extension, passengers will only be able to access their concession fares by using their Smarter Card because the only tickets that bus drivers will be able to issue are the $120 adult fare tickets," he said.

Meanwhile for this week, the JUTC is appealing to adult passengers not to seek to get Smarter Cards because it will be focusing on issuing Smarter Cards to concession passengers.

As a consequence, the JUTC will not be issuing new cards for adult fare paying passengers.

However, it will continue to top up existing adult cards.

The JUTC says passengers who pay adult fare and who already have Smarter Cards may use their cards while those without cards may pay their fares with cash.

The JUTC says in the past three days, it has issued in excess of 10,000 Smarter Cards.
