St James cop implicated in release of prisoner freed of corruption
Christopher Thomas

WESTERN BUREAU:
One of the cops charged with corruption in relation to the unlawful release of a prisoner in 2013, was freed of the charges when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court today.

Constable Kirton Green, who was charged with corruptly soliciting money, was on trial with Constables Raymond Johnson and Alicia Hutchinson.

All three were taken before the courts on allegations that they participated in the release of Greg Taylor from the Freeport lock-up in Montego Bay, under questionable circumstances, on January 30, 2013.

It is alleged that while in custody Green approached Taylor and solicited $500,000 from him to arrange for his release.

It was also reported that Green further solicited $150,000 from Taylor before he was allegedly taken out of the lock-up by Hutchinson and Johnson.

Today, presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie dismissed the charges against Green on the grounds that the evidence against him, which included testimony from Taylor, was not sufficient for a conviction.

However, the case against Hutchinson and Johnson will continue.

They were ordered to return to court on September 4.
