The island’s more than 2000 correctional officers remain on strike as they press the government to settle outstanding salary issues.

The officers started protesting yesterday.

The public sector workers and their unions are upset that despite a promise that they will be paid outstanding salaries, the government is yet to provide details.

In his Contribution to Sectoral Debate on July 8, Minister with responsibility for the Public Service, Horace Dalley, said he had reached an agreement with correctional officers on the issue of outstanding salary.

Dalley said the increase would be paid next month.

However, the correctional officers say there have not any further word from the government on the matter.

For months, correctional officers, their unions and the government have been at odds over the implementation of a 2011 relativity study to align the salaries of their members with those of firefighters.

The alignments were to take effect on April 1, last year with implementation set for January 2014.

But only firefighters received the pay increase.

Correctional officers and their unions have accused the government is being unfair.
