UWI probes bones found on former slave village site
Archaeologists at the University of the West Indies, Mona, are now carrying out investigations following the discovery of bones at an area of the campus known to have been the site of the Papine Slave Village.
On January 31 a construction worker reportedly recognized bones in the walls of the trench that was dug in the vicinity of the Medical Sciences complex on the campus.
He alerted his supervisor, following which the Department of History and Archaeology was contacted and informed about the discovery, which were identified to be human remains.
Since Thursday, a team led by Dr Stephan Lenik, Lecturer in Archaeology has been carrying out recovery and documentation to at the site thought to be a burial ground.
They are reportedly working to establish the date of burial and the identity of the individuals.
