NWC denies river pollution claims in Westmoreland
The National Water Commission (NWC) is refuting claims by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) that one of its plants has been polluting the South Negril River in Westmoreland.
The NWC says its Negril Sewage Treatment Plant is not malfunctioning as claimed by NEPA.
It also said its preliminary analysis of the Chemical Oxygen Demand from discharged effluent from the treatment ponds indicates that the ponds are not contributing negatively to the health of the river.
In addition, the NWC says NEPA has not provided any empirical evidence suggesting that untreated sewage is being discharged into the South Negril River from the wastewater ponds.
The NWC said it remains available to work closely with NEPA and all other relevant stakeholders to identify the cause of the pollution and to resolve the issue.
