$3 million for mosquito eradication programme in Portmore

Local Government Minister Noel Arscott said $3 million has been allocated for an interim mosquito eradication programme in Portmore, St Catherine, while a review of a comprehensive programme is being conducted.

Last month, Arscott issued a stop order on more than $14.2 million worth of drainage works, saying a review was required following a report by the Auditor General.

Jamaica Labour Party councillors are upset about the move, accusing Arscott of victimisation.

But Arscott said the funds were withheld from the Portmore municipality following the failure of the Mayor to respond promptly to a request for details on the programme of work in six communities

He said the report was only received this week.

Arscott said he is aware of the issues caused by the condition of the drains in the community and is moving urgently to address them.

He said the interim mosquito eradication programme and fogging will provide some relief to the residents who have been complaining of the mosquito nuisance in the community.
