Editorial - Moving beyond parliamentary dramatics
It would have been grander theatre if the Opposition had 'elected' a speaker and had managed to have the mace in place for its unilateral sitting of the House on Tuesday.

Still treating the symptoms
Jamaicans are marvelous people. They are innately creative, fundamentally intelligent, truly warm and friendly. Yet, if one were to follow the media, one would feel that we were a hateful, spiteful, vicious people. Although it can be said that the media tends to focus on the sensational and that acts of viciousness and spite are generally more sensational than those of love, warmth, creativity and intelligence, one would be deluding oneself if one did not see that something was wrong with us.

Fighting crime is everybody's responsibility
The article in The Gleaner of Monday, January 4, 'Church failing Ja', along with that of Sunday, January 3 by Esther Tyson, give us pause to examine how the Church could influence 'the fight against crime'. It's good to see such lively and spirited discussions which, hopefully will be converted into action.

Yemen on edge
In response to an alleged threat from al-Qaida, the British and American embassies in Yemen closed briefly this week. Yemen's government then complained that both governments were being alarmist, because it has the threat of al-Qaida under control.

Inspiring Jamaicans in 2010
Recently, Vivian Crawford, executive director of the Institute of Jamaica, was inspired to lend me Ruby Martin's copy of the book Power List 2010: Britain's 100 most Influential Black People, published by Michael Eboda, information from which I have decided to use for my first column for the new year and new decade.
