Shouts of "Asafa! Asafa!" echoed at the homecoming celebration held in honour of former 100-metre world-record holder Asafa Powell on Sunday, October 11, at the home of his parents in Angels, St Catherine.

The occasion saw a number of family, friends, clad in shirts bearing the athlete's photograph, blocking the street for several hours, while singing Asafa'spraise.

"It is a very wonderful feeling to have Asafa here this time, although, it is an annual celebration, this year has been a rough one for him so it feels very good," Nigel Powell the athlete's elder brother said.

William and Cyslin Powell proudly embraced their son on his arrival and sat at his side throughout the proceedings.

Gospel artiste, Cleve 'Lieutenant Stitchie' Laing gave a blistering performance along with Rising Stars finalist Sachael Smith.

Powell thanked those who empowered him to continue on his career as an athlete.

Close-knit family

"There are times when I felt down but with the continued support of those who believe in me, I was able to go on. Thank you," Powell told the gathering.

He mentioned his close-knit family, especially his brother, Nigel, to whom he said there was a debt of gratitude.

"I remember that it was Nigel who helped me so that I could be successful in my Common Entrance exams, and I passed for Charlemont High and that's where it all began," Powell continued.

The function ended with prayer and singing from Stitchie and then it was time to enjoy the lavish spread.
