Henrietta Vinton Daley, affectionately called 'Vin' and 'Mother D' of Harbour View, St Andrew, was a very active member of her community.
She was involved in the Harbour View Primary School's Parent Teacher Association and the Harbour View Citizens Association. She was also an active member of St Benedict's Catholic Church where she served as a minister of the Eucharist.
Mother D was born to parents, Margaret Hines and Joseph Gaynor, on November 17, 1929 in Jones Town. Her parents were loyal Marcus Garvey followers and named her after one of Marcus Garvey's secretaries. She attended Jones Town Elementary School and later went to business school. She worked as a secretary for the organisers of the Jamaica Festival Competition. She then worked as a secretary at JAMAL and later, served the then rector of St Michael's seminary, Bishop Charles Dufour, as secretary.
She got married to Sylvester Daley in 1952. He was a teacher at Kingston Technical High School and later, the College of Arts, Science and Technology. The union produced two children, Denise and Stewart.
Loved cooking
Mother D enjoyed cooking and gardening. Once in her presence, one would never go hungry. She also attended the Jamaica School of Agriculture on a part-time basis to do gardening courses and received many certificates from the school.
After Mother D retired, she resided in New York with her son and daughter.
She died on July 29 in New York.
Her children, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one niece, one sister, son-in-law Barry Francis, daughter-in-law Dahlia Daley, other relatives and a host of friends survive and miss her.
Mother D's thanksgiving service was held on Friday, August 7, at St Benedict's Church at 2 p.m. Inter-ment followed at Sunset Burial Park.
