Party central - Jamaicans celebrate in Half-Way Tree

Jamaicans celebrating victory in the men's 4x100 metres at the World Championships in Berlin in the busy Half-Way Tree area yesterday.

The atmosphere was tense as Jamaica's women lined up with women from seven other countries for the 4x100m final.

Nothing and nobody seemed ready to move except the bus conductors and sidemen who desperately tried to get commuters to board the parked vehicles.

"Hope dem nuh drop de baton this time like in Beijing," a male spectator stated as he moved through the crowd.

As the Jamaican team was being announced, a spectator softly and nervously stated, "Veronica (Campbell-Brown) not in the line-up."

Seconds later, the starter's gun went off and the crowd began cheering.

"Run, Shelly-Ann! Run, Aleen! Run, Kerron, run!" spectators shouted.

Cheering

In 42.06 seconds, as the clock stopped, the smiles broke out and the cheering started, with verbal barbs being thrown at Campbell-Brown.

"Veronica must feel like ... . Seh she walk off the team," Sean Vassell, a spectator, stated.

"They did good without Veronica," said Damion Smith.

The victory set the mood going into the 4x100m relay and the crowd increased in size as the countdown began.

"I leave home to watch the race here because of the vibes," stated Kavel Campbell.

"A we gwine win it," another excited spectator stated.

That was a sentiment shared by the crowd with the emphasis being placed on the time the Jamaican team would record in winning the gold medal.

"Is another world record we want," stated one spectator who wanted to be identified as 'Maxine'.

People erupted

As the line-up was shown, the people erupted into cheers and every move made by a Jamaican athlete was greeted heartily.

The world-record holder, Usain Bolt, took the spotlight with every gimmick he did.

Deafening screams mixed with honking horns and the sound of the trumpet was the response to Bolt holding up his T-shirt to the cameras.

Someone in the crowd unsuccessfully, though jokingly, tried to silence the crowd as Bolt placed a finger to his lips.

The few policemen who gathered tried to prevent a human blockade of the roadway but their efforts were overpowered as soon as the relay began.

The policemen willingly gave in to the roars of the crowd as the starter's gun set the race in motion.

"We are in Berlin at the World Championships," one spectator shouted.

Her happy jig was drowned out by the crowd's boisterous cheers.

In 37.31 seconds, the expectation of gold was realised, but the people were not willing to move as they danced merrily on bus tops and knocked on the sides of vehicles in celebration.
