PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
Despite floundering at the bottom of the table and needing a miracle to rescue their World Cup hopes, winger Carlos Edwards has refused to give up hope that Trinidad & Tobago can reach football's marquee showpiece in South Africa next year.
The twin-island republic have a paltry two points from five outings after failing to win a single game but Edwards said a revival of the World Cup dream could start with a win on Wednesday against El Salvador.
"It's an absolutely critical game for us and we need everyone on board. I don't see any reason why people should not want to continue their support," the Sunderland midfielder said.
"It's far from over but we need to make things better for ourselves by getting a victory on Wednesday."
T&T are attempting to repeat their historic feat of 2006 when they qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals in Germany for the first time.
However, their hopes have taken repeated hits with three losses and two draws, which have virtually eliminated them from contention.
They suffered two losses in the space of five days in June when they lost 3-2 to Costa Rica and 2-1 to Mexico, leaving them desperately in need of points.
They will face an El Salvador side with which they played to a pulsating 2-2 draw back in February and Edwards backed T&T to give 100 per cent as they attempted to take full points from the encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
"I know for sure the players will give their all because we know how important three points will be on the day," said Edwards.
"The gaffer has been getting the rest of the squad ready and the players arriving to join the final team know for sure that they have to pick their game up and try to push on.
"The last two games were not bad in terms of performance but we didn't get the results we wanted. This time we have to make it all count on Wednesday."
El Salvador have five points and hover just above T&T in the six-team table led by Costa Rica on 12 points.
