  • Sagicor upset Broilers in cricket

    Lowly placed Sagicor scored a surprise victory over high-riding Jamaica Broilers in the Digicel cricket series Reggae Jammin 50-over Business House league at Spring Village, in St Catherine, last Sunday.

    Playing away, Sagicor turned in a gritty performance to beat the home team by 71 runs. Sagicor 270 for seven off their allotted 42 overs - opener Shane Ricketts 90, Brian Wright 60; Robert Turner 3-40, Nicoy Lindo 2-44.

    Jamaica Broilers, in reply, were bowled out for 199 in 32.1 overs - Peter Caballero 49, Fabian Lakeman 35; Robert Weir 3-31, pacer Aaron Daley Jr 2-49.

    AT MONA: St Ann Jamaica Bauxite defeated Continental Baking Company by 102 runs. St Ann Bauxite 270 in 38.3 overs - Marlon Pinnock 59, Richard Hemmings 58, national player Andre Dwyer 50; Kenny Isaacs 5-40. Continental Baking Company 168 off 28 overs - Jermaine Brown 36, Danny Cayman 32; Marlon Gayle 5-44, Dwyer 2-57.

    The competition continues today with three matches. These are LIME vs St Ann Jamaica Bauxite in the feature at Chalmers Avenue, Jamaica Broilers vs Jamalco at Spring Village and NWC vs Sagicor at Mona.

  • Courts win first match in football

    Courts won their first match in the KSAFA/Western Sports Division I football league last Monday when they defeated JNBS 3-1 at Barbican playing field.

    Goals from Kean Burke in the fifth minute, Rivoli's Premier League player Jermaine Oakley in the ninth and 36th minutes enabled Courts to finally open their account. Niame Cole scored the consolation goal for JNBS in the 75th minute.

    In another Division I match on Monday, NWC clipped UWI 2-1 at NWC playing field, Mona. Trace McKenzie sent NWC ahead in the sixth minute, but Norman Townsend equalised for UWI two minutes later before Garfield Robinson notched the winning goal for NWC in the 87th minute.

    Up to last Friday, the points standings in Division I are as follows: Scotiabank Group lead with 12 points from five matches, followed by unbeaten defending champions Carib Cement and NWC both with 11 points from five matches, unbeaten The Gleaner with nine points from five matches, JNBS five from six, UWI four from six, Courts three from six and NCB three points from four matches.

    The matches scheduled for tomorrow are Carib Cement vs NWC in the feature at Bull Pen and UWI vs Courts at Mona. Next Saturday, August 15, Scotiabank will oppose The Gleaner in their final round fixture. The top four teams in the standings at the end of the preliminary round will advance to the semi-finals.

  • Division II football

    GraceKennedy crushed previous leaders NHT 4-0 in a KSAFA/Western Sports Division II football match at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex last Wednesday.

    GraceKennedy owed their victory to a firsthalf hat-trick of goals from Jemar Dawkins, while Bruce Boyd netted the fourth in the 62nd minute.

    In another Division II match at Mona, the 2008 KO champions Petrojam blanked Jamaica Fire Brigade 3-0, thanks to goals from Kevin Barclay and Akeem Finson in the first half and Steve Crooks in the 81st minute.

    Petrojam lead the Division II standings with 11 points from five matches, followed by NHT with eight from five, Grace and Wisynco both with seven points from five matches, Norman Manley International Airport five from four, Fire Brigade five from five and Nubian Construction two from five.

  • Five-a-side league

    The Business House five-a-side competition is in high gear with Jamaica Broilers sole leaders in Division I, while four teams lead their respective zones in Division II which is contested by 56 teams.

    In recent Division I matches at the NWC playing field, defending champions Geon Homes crushed Courts 6-0, thanks to a hat-trick from Stephen Squire and two goals from Marvin McDonald.

    Peak Bottling clipped Sagicor 1-0 with a first-half goal from Dujon Murphy, while G4S edged Universal Windows and Doors 4-3 with Andrew Mais scoring a hat-trick for Peak Bottling. Scotiabank clipped two-time champions Tank-Weld Metals 1-0 with a second half strike by Donovan Hibbert, while Jamaica Broilers stopped Courts 3-1 with David Lewis, Ralston Morris and Dowen Brown netting.

    In Division II, zone one leaders Alcor Windows and Doors blanked RBTT 4-0 thanks to a brace from Valdern Walker. Zone II leaders UDC clipped JMMB 2-1 with goals from Orrett Warren and Jerome Wedderburn, while Rupert Hoilette netted for the losers.

    In Zone III, leaders Smith and Stewart/Crazy Jim beat SportsMax 2-0 with goals from Raymond Farquharson and Romaine Thomas. And in zone four, second-place Maritime and Transport were held to a goalless draw by Kingston Wharves. Zone leaders are Locker Room Sports/Fence Masters who boast the competition's leading scorers in national player Lovel Palmer and Kirk Ramsay, both with 12 goals apiece.

  • Netball

    The Business Netball Association's Senior, Intermediate and Junior league competitions, which should have started at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday, were postponed yesterday to observe the funeral of Lady Bustamante.

    The opening rally and matches have been rescheduled to Tuesday at the same venue. Scotiabank, recent winners of the Business House Open League, are favourites to capture the Senior League.
