"As a defensive driver, I try to be sufficiently focused and observe what's happening around, behind and in front of me. I make use of my mirrors and pay attention to road signs and markings," said Angella Harris, community officer at the Citizens Security and Justice Programme.
Here are some of the actions that can cause distractions and stress on our roadways:
1. The aggressive nature of some drivers.
2. Unpreparedness to respond defensively to wrong moves made by other drivers.
3. Tiredness and low concentration span following a long journey.
4. Overconfidence in one's ability to overtake, even when the move seems risky.
5. Negative emotional response to work-related matters and personal challenges, resulting in preoccupation with one's thoughts.
6. Driving above the legal speed limit, which puts a greater demand on the driver's response skills.
7. Consumption of drugs and alcohol, which can have a negative effect upon the driver's decision-making ability.
