Carlton Baugh Jr fell 16 runs short of what would have been a deserved century at Up Park Camp on yesterday's fourth and final day of the first trial match to select Jamaica's team for the upcoming regional four-day competition.
The right-hander, who was hoping to become the fourth batsmen in the match to score a hundred behind Tamar Lambert (162), Brenton Parchment (127) and Wavell Hinds (105 not out), slammed two sixes and 12 fours in making 84, as his team, Lambert's XI, led David Bernard Jr's XI on first innings.
Lambert's XI first made 462 to which Bernard Jr's XI replied with 432. Lambert's XI were then bowled out for 241 in their second innings, which set up a victory chase of 272 in less than two hours for Bernard Jr XI.
Bernard Jr XI then abandoned the nigh impossible run chase in late evening without facing a ball.
"It's a good start to the selection phase. The batsmen did extremely well, not only in the amount of runs scored, but the amount of time spent at the wicket," said coach Junior Bennett.
"I have to also give credit to the bowlers, as I thought on a flat pitch and a very quick outfield they tried their best to bowl in good areas," he added.
Overnight
After resuming on an overnight 25-1 Lambert's XI stumbled to 74 for five before lunch.
Danza Hyatt, who was six overnight, went on to make 34, while Xavier Marshall, who resumed on five, fell for 12 and Lambert for a duck.
But thanks to Baugh and fast bowler Andrew Richardson, who hit seven sixes and two fours in making 59, Lambert's XI staged a revival to save the match.
Findlay and Bernard claimed 2-25 each, Dawes 2-53, and leg-spinner Odean Brown 2-50.
The second and penultimate trial match will be played at Melbourne Oval beginning on Saturday.
