Recuperating pastor says 'thanks'
The Editor, Sir:

It has been approximately 15 months since a vicious attempt was made to take my life with three gunshots and four knife wounds, for reasons still unknown to me. This attack took place on the verandah of the Mt Carey Baptist Manse, where my family has lived for 29 years. By the miraculous grace of God, I have been kept alive and continue to recuperate. The process has been a slow, painful and tedious one but Psalm 23:4 continues to be a source of comfort and strength.

Through this medium I wish to express a sincere word of thanks for the support I have received since May 26, 2008. The varied expressions of care and concern, love and affection far exceed my wildest dreams. I had no idea that the simple life of a rural Baptist pastor meant so much to so many people all across the island and beyond.

'Angels of mercy'

The Church community, inclusive of all denominations, generally, and the Mt Carey Circuit of Baptist Churches and the Jamaica Baptist Union in particular, have been with me all along the journey. Members of the wider community who have not openly committed themselves to Christ or the Church have not hesitated to express their best wishes. My medical caregivers in Jamaica and the USA have indeed been 'angels of mercy' in treating me and I also salute the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force who transported me to the Cornwall Regional Hospital as quickly as they could. Various sectors of the media fraternity covered the incident and gave scope for individual expressions in addition to their own outpouring of love. I hereby express my gratitude to all listed above.

Finally, let me publicly acknowledge, with thanks, the care of my immediate family, as together we endeavour to cope with the unexpected pain, displacement and uncertainties associated with this situation.

I still believe Jamaica is a good place with a large majority of good people living in it and I continue to pray for our beloved country.

Thanks to everyone, and God bless you all.

I am, etc.,

REV DR GEORGE V SIMPSON
