Discredited arguments for God
The Editor, Sir:

Christians continue to use discredited arguments in support of the existence of their god/God. Specifically, they continue to use the infinite regression problem and the fine-tuning arguments.

Due to the problem of infinite regression, it is claimed that the universe cannot be infinite. Infinity prevents the first event from ever being reached, as each event is always preceded by another. This being the case, the converse must also be true - the present cannot be reached. Since the universe cannot be infinite, it is claimed, it must have had a beginning and thus a creator. This creator must be God.

However, this is a self-contradictory argument. God, we are told, is both actual and infinite. This being the case, the obvious question must be asked: How did God arrive at any moment to do anything? The problem of infinite regression can actually be used against God's existence!

Pure speculation

Then we are told that the universe could never support life, as we know it, if it was structured any other way. No matter how slight, our universe could not sustain life, as we know it, if it was any diffe-rent. Thus, it is claimed, the universe supports our life because it was created specifically for us.

The truth to this argument, however, is the opposite. Life, as we know it, adapted to suit the universe. Also, as our environment changes, so do we. Indeed, the fine-tuning argument is based on pure speculation.

Christians must stop giving atheists like myself more reasons to be convinced that their God cannot be real.

I am, etc.,
