Effortville erupts after last-minute equaliser
Richard Bryan, Gleaner Writer

Omar Walters grabbed a last-minute equaliser in their Digicel Premier League match to give newcomers Humble Lions a share of the points against Portmore United in a tough but exciting 2-2 draw at Effortville yesterday.

The newcomers had sent their spectators in a frenzy when Sean Coleman rounded off a good move by wily forward Kevin Mighty in the 21st minute by beating Dwayne Kerr from just outside the six-yard area.

That goal merely added to the charged atmosphere at half-time, where over 2,000 fans joined Jamaica Football Federation President Captain Horace Burrell and Member of Parliament Mike Henry at the newly renovated facilities.

Portmore would rebound, but almost against the run of play, when a Clarendon-born player, Cornelius Henry, nephew of one of that parish's best-known players - Chris Dawes - snuk in to crash home a shot from 12 yards that gave goalkeeper Damion Crooks no chance.

This sent Humble Lions back-pedalling and Portmore would make them pay when Tyrone Lampart committed a novice error and was robbed of the ball he tried to shield by the hard-pressing Kevin Deerr.

Hounded, the defender yielded, hoping referee Dwight Royal would blow for a foul. Deerr capitalised and quickly crossed to the centre where an advancing McIntosh left Crooks a mere spectator.

That setback was the motivation the Clarendon team needed and, spurred by the large turnout of spectators, they ran hard at Portmore.

The equaliser came when Coleman's free kick was met with a header on goal by Roan Williams. Goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr made a parried save as he hit the ground. The onrushing Walters charged in and cannoned the ball away from the goalkeeper's outstretched arms into the goal, to set off wild celebrations as if the team had won.

Humble Lions 2

Sean Coleman 21st, Omar Walters 90th

Portmore 2

Cornelius Henry 61st, Gary McIntosh 69th
