Corrodus looking to clinch championship

Western Bureau:

With five first place finishes in six outings, Montego Bay-based race driver Dean Corrodus is now the runaway leader in the race for the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club's (JMMC) National Rally Sport Drivers' championship.

Corrodus, who won the coveted championship in 2006 and has his eyes set on repeating that feat this year, has been the dominant force in the JA3 class with his sleek Honda Civic Type R, which has left all the other drivers admiring it from behind every time it hits the track.

"My only second place finish came in the first event of the season when I used another car," said Corrodus. "I used the Mitsubishi Mirage RS of my closest rival, Dion 'Babybomb' Gardener, and finished second."

Corrodus, who spent many years in the shadows of fellow Montegonians Douglas Gore, Richard Rerrie, Andrew Forsythe and Strathon King, has been the western city's top driver since he won his maiden championship in 2006.

With 580 points, a whopping 110 clear of second place Richard Chan, who has 470, Corrodus is well on the way to a second title.

Rerrie has been the most successful Montegonian driver over the years, copping the coveted title three times. Gore, Forsythe and King (Strathon) are among the most popular champions to have emerged out of rural Jamaica.

According to Corrodus, his Honda Civic Type R, which has been giving him so much success, is a most reliable and powerful car with which he is absolutely satisfied.

"It is fitted with individual throttle bodies on its 16-valve, double overhead camshaft B20 VTEC engine," said Corrodus. "It was built by Wayne Wallace of Horse P Racing, who prepares cars for the likes of Dover Raceway stars Peter Jaggan, Brian Foster and Chris Wright, all of whom pilot very fast and capable Hondas."

Leader in two areas

Corrodus, who currently leads the JA3 and the Rally Champion-ship, in addition to the overall championship, now has his sights set on the Heroes of Speed race meet, which will take place at Dover Raceway in St Ann, on Heroes Day, October 19.

"With just three more points scoring events left in the season and a maximum 150 points possible to be scored from each event, I will be looking to clinch the championship by the penultimate event, the Spot Valley Racing Extrava-ganza Part 2 on November 1," said Corrodus. "If not, I should get there at the JMMC's signature event, Rally Jamaica, to be held on December 4 to 6."

Corrodus will be on show this Sunday at the JMMC/Meshugata Event Promotions Dexterity number four (4) at Pines Plaza, Junction, St Elizabeth. That event will start at 2:30 p.m.
