Cynical leaps of illogicality
The Editor, Sir:

At the end of Gordon Robinson's article in the Tuesday edition it was stated that he is an attorney-at-law. That seems to be the only line in the article that was not spiced with cynical leaps of illogicality. Lest my motives be unclear, I do not support either anti-gay violence or excessive government expenditure.

Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett's job is to promote Jamaican tourism (not, by the way, to fight crime and violence): capitalising on the success of our athletes is not only sensible, it is precisely the kind of marketing that is needed to attract attention to Jamaica as a destination. I believe there is a tremendous opportunity to market Jamaica and specifically Kingston as a sports mecca, not only attracting athletes but a larger investment by the Nikes and Pumas of the world.

Incongruous statement

While I would admit that Mr Golding's responses on the BBC's HardTalk could have been more politically sensitive, had he said one thing and done another we would have accused him of being two-faced. I found his perspective on the programme to be forthright and something that Jamaicans can largely be proud of.

How Robinson arrives at Golding's statement being a justification for John Terry's murder (or any murder) is simply incongruous. And where in his statement (or that of any government official) does Robinson get the idea that we only welcome heterosexual tourists to Jamaica?

Angering the wrong person

I am also concerned that an attorney would advocate the handover of a Jamaican citizen to a foreign power (regardless of how powerful) without some kind of due process! I wonder if he would be as vocal if a fellow attorney or a noted businessman were requested? many Jamaicans own businesses in the US and could be extradited for tax evasion or corporate fraud allegations or various other crimes. What then? My hope is only that the Government will employ the same probity for all Jamaican citizens, not just those with an umbilical cord into the Jamaica Labour Party or its garrisons.

Robinson appears to fear angering the US more than safeguarding legal due process; the gay tourists more than effectively marketing Jamaica to all tourists; the potential wrath of some members of the foreign press rather than making positive news through our nations successes. Perhaps he had best return to the domino game.

I am, etc.,
