A Jamaica man who is wanted in the United States for his alleged involvement in a lottery scam ring that defrauded elderly American citizens of thousands of dollars today consented to being extradited to that country to stand trial.
He has been identified as Damion Barrett, who according to Jamaican law enforcement sources, has been a major player in the deadly lottery scam.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn told The Gleaner-Power 106 News Centre this afternoon that Barrett is wanted in the Sourhern District of Florida, where he has been indicted on two counts of wire fraud charges.
Each count carries a maximum of 30 years in prison.
Barrett appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court this morning and waived his right to an extradition hearing.
As a result, Llewellyn said all documents relating to Barrett's extradition should be submitted to Justice Minister Mark Golding by the end of this week for authorisation to have the alleged scammer handed over to US authorities.
She says the extradition request from US law enforcement authorities alleges that between 2008 and 2012 Barrett and another Jamaican, Oneike Mickhale Barnett, contacted elderly citizens in the US and falsely informed them that they had won large sums of money in a lottery.
Barnett has already pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges in the US.
