The National Workers Union in St Lucia has expressed concern about the continuing increase in unemployment levels in the country.
Deputy President Solace Mayers pointed to the continuous reduction in flight arrivals at the George F.L. Charles Airport and the negative impact this was having on the economy.
Mayers noted that the airport is usually busy at certain times of the year but says there has been a fall off in traffic.
She further added that LIAT has reduced its daily flights and is contemplating a shutdown of its cargo operation.
Mayers said this would result in additional job losses and will also negatively impact taxi drivers, the airport cafeteria, vendors and a sub-branch bank operation at the airport.
