Juror contracts chikungunya, Circuit Court case adjourned
Barbara Gayle, Justice Coordinator

KINGSTON, Jamaica:
Ongoing cases in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston continue to be affected by the chikungunya virus.

This morning a judge had to adjourn the case involving two fishermen, charged with the murder of three children in 2004.

This as one of the jurors in the matter has reportedly contracted the chikungunya virus.

Justice Gloria Smith who is trying the case adjourned it until Wednesday.

She says at that time an assessment will be made whether to continue the case without the sick juror.

Meanwhile, The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre has learnt that the Supreme Court building was fogged last night after Justice Smith’s request last week.

Justice Smith said she made the request in light of the chikungunya virus and a problem of mosquitoes in the building.

Justice Minister Mark Golding had told our news centre that he would have had the request fulfilled.

Several cases had to be adjourned because court staff, witnesses and jurors complained of chikungunya like symptoms last week.
