The family of Mario Deane and noted American civil rights lawyer, Jasmine Rand, are to host a press conference in Kingston, today.
Rand was part of the legal team that represented the family of Trayvon Martin, the black teen who was shot and killed in Florida by neighbourhood watchman George Zimmerman.
Attorney-at-law Bert Samuels will host the one o’clock press conference at his Duke Street offices on behalf of his colleague Michael Lorne, the attorney for the family of Mario Deane.
Rand, who is not licensed to practise law in Jamaica, has vowed to use her association with the case, to bring international spotlight on Jamaica to ensure that justice is done.
The press conference is scheduled to take place one day before famed American pathologist, Dr Michael Baden, conducts an independent autopsy on Deane’s body.
Baden was part of the team that re-investigated the assassination of former US President John F Kennedy.
Most recently, he conducted an independent autopsy on the body of Michael Brown, the unarmed black teen who was shot and killed by a white police officer in the state of Missouri.
Attorney Michael Lorne and the pathologist are expected to arrive in Jamaica from the United States this evening.
On August 3, Mario Deane was arrested by the St James police for a ganja spliff.
Three days later, he died in hospital after being beaten while locked up at the Barnett Street Police Station, in Montego Bay.
His death has triggered local and international protests with calls for justice for his family.
Two inmates have been charged with the murder while a police corporal and two constables have been interdicted and three district constables suspended pending the outcome of probe by the police inspectorate.
