The Opposition says no amount of explanation from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) could justify the lengthy loss of power to sections of Portmore in St Catherine since Wednesday.
And it is urging the light and power company to quickly restore electricity to the affected sections.
The JPS says Portmore communities have been losing power because of the build-up of dust and salt spray caused by the drought, on the power distribution system.
The company says it has been suspending electricity in order to facilitate the washing of the lines to reduce the impact of contaminants.
However, Opposition Spokesperson on Energy, Karl Samuda is not accepting that explanation.
He says rehabilitation activities should be carried out on a phased and time-specific basis so as to not interrupt the power supply.
Samuda says the suspension of electricity is creating a humanitarian problem because persons suffering from diabetes need to refrigerate vital medication.
Yesterday, the JPS said affected communities included Seaforth, Johnson Hill, Hellshire Heights, Cave Hill, Half Moon, Sand Hill, Bridgeport, West Port, Edgewater, Garvey Meade, West Meade, and Waterford.
