Opposition not surprised energy project deadline will be missed

The Opposition says it is not surprised that the 2016 timeline for the construction of a major energy plant will be missed.

The Opposition spokesman on energy, Karl Samuda, says at the height of the controversy involving Energy World International (EWI), he had warned that the project would not be completed by 2016.

Professor Alvin Wint, a member of the Energy Sector Enterprise Team, reported yesterday that the 2016 timeline will be missed.

He disclosed that 2017 is the earliest Jamaicans should expect the plant that the government has said will considerably reduce energy costs.

The missed deadline comes despite Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell’s stridency in Parliament in May that the timeline would not be moved.

But Samuda says it was clear that the timeline would not be met after the Government decided to terminate its arrangement with EWI.
