Be like Nehemiah, forego allowances, bishop tells Government members

Anglican Bishop Right Reverend Dr Howard Gregory is urging government members to show the nation that they too are making the sacrifice they expect of Jamaicans to face in the current harsh economic climate.

Reverend Gregory was delivering the sermon at the 144th Synod of the Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands at the St Ann’s Bay Parish Church yesterday.

He likened Jamaica’s current situation to that faced by prophet Nehemiah during the Persian rule over Judea and urged leaders to follow his example.

He said Nehemiah made the decision to forego his allowance as governor because of the heavy tax-burdens which the people were already being asked to bear.

Reverend Gregory said Jamaica’s confrontation with the debt and moral, religious and social crises requires the collective efforts of everyone, including the Church.

The Government has been facing opposition after unveiling $6.7 billion in new taxes.
