The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says it is working to have the fire at the Riverton Disposal Site extinguished by Friday.

In the meantime, the NSWMA says there’s to be greater control over the number of persons who have access to the landfill as part of an initial review of security arrangements.

It says a full review will be done involving members of the Jamaica Defence Force, the police and the private security company contracted to Riverton.

The fire at the disposal site, which is believed to have been set by arsonists, started on Saturday and has been causing a smoke nuisance to the people of several Corporate Area communities.

The move by the NSWMA follows the National Environment and Planning
Agency, NEPA's decision yesterday to serve an Enforcement Notice and a Notice of Intention to Suspend Permit on the company.

NEPA has told the NSWMA to put a stop to the smoke discharge in three days and submit a detailed report of the incident within 14 days.

The agency has also demanded that the NSWMA puts in place, a proper security system within the next 30 days to prevent unauthorized access to the Riverton City site.

NEPA says if the Authority fails to meet these deadlines it will move to have Riverton’s environmental permits suspended.
