Police High Command: Internal measures responsible for decline in fatal shootings
The Police High Command is claiming that measures implemented by the leadership of the Force are the reasons for the decline in fatal shootings.
Yesterday, oversight body the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) reported that there has been a reduction in the number of people killed by the security forces for the first quarter of 2014.
INDECOM said between January and March it recorded a total of 40 fatalities.
This is 36 fewer than the first quarter of 2013 in which 76 fatalities were recorded, representing a 47.3 per cent drop in the number of killings.
Reacting to the figures, the high command, in a statement this morning, credited the fall in fatal shootings to stricter enforcement of the Use of Force Policy along with frequent safe encounters advisory broadcasted on the Police radio network.
The high command further says there has been a vast improvement in operational planning and execution, which has resulted in greater observance of safety.
According to the high command, criminals have been responding to the police’s appeal for them to avoid confrontations and to surrender peacefully.
It says this has resulted in fewer injury or loss of life.
