Youth Minister, Lisa Hanna, is making a last ditch appeal for the Sisters of Mercy to keep the residential care facility at Alpha Boys’ School open.

It was recently announced that the institution will only be operated as a day school with the residential services to come to an end in June.

The youth minister has cited behavioural problems including sexual deviance among the main reasons given by the Sisters for the closure.

The administrators of the home later said the boys had been damaged by unfortunate statements made on the matter and cited financial challenges as the main reason for the closure of the home.

However, Hanna says she believes she is very clear on the reasons for the closure and adds that during meetings the cost to run the Alpha Boys’ Home and the St John Bosco home in Manchester was discussed.

The youth minister says since coming to office she has ensured that increases were given to the home’s subvention.

She says despite the position of one of the Sisters that no amount of money can persuade them to continue with the residential services, she still wants to urge the Sisters of Mercy to keep the Alpha Boys’ Home open.
