Espeut's omission
THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM amazed that Peter Espeut in his article in The Sunday Gleaner of December 30, 2012 on the decline of the Roman Catholic Church in Jamaica failed to mention the impact of the sexual abuse scandals as a possible contributing factor to the decline.

Much copy was devoted to other likely factors such as migration, conversion to other denominations, and the lack of an evangelical thrust by the church, but not a single mention of the one issue which dwarfs all these.

A church, where members of its clergy, sexually molest vulnerable and defenceless little boys, and a hierarchy which sometimes goes to elaborate lengths to shield the perpetrators from being exposed and punished for their crimes, is not an institution to be admired. No wonder its members are leaving in droves and it is failing to attract new and younger converts.

I find it difficult to believe that Espeut was suffering from forgetfulness. We will not forget.
