Give to the poor this Christmas

As Christmas nears, I remind myself of the need to share at this time. I think the words of Christ are sufficient to guide those of us who are blessed with a surplus.

Giving started with God's greatest gift; sending his only son to us. In return, we must be guided by His Son's directions on the subject of giving when, at St Luke 14 verses 11-14, He said:

"When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

This message was reinforced by my reading of Proverbs 19:17, where it is recorded as follows: "Whosever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done."
