LETTER OF THE DAY - Adopt the executive prime ministership mode
In a November 19 op-ed, The Gavel suggested that executive duties be removed from Parliament. While I do agree with the suggestion, it appears that the same tired, old recommendation that Jamaica move towards an executive presidential system is again raising its ugly head.

Sunnyside mourns
It is with great sadness that the community of Sunnyside and adjoining areas got the sad news of the passing of our justice of the peace, Alan White, who was shot at his home on Saturday night by callous gunmen.

Give to the poor this Christmas
As Christmas nears, I remind myself of the need to share at this time. I think the words of Christ are sufficient to guide those of us who are blessed with a surplus.

Proposal for satisfying IMF conditions
It is obvious that the future of this country is dependent on us getting an International Monetary Fund (IMF) deal. We have also heard of some of the conditionalities that are proposed by the IMF before they can allow this country to access any funds.

The other side of the UTech debacle
I note with some bemusement the condemnatory responses to the recent incident that took place at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech), involving campus security guards and a suspected gay student. Individuals with a public platform, civil-society groups and government officials cry shame on the security guards and student mob, and call for tolerance of people who are different.
