Jamaica Epicurean Escape - the perfect start to Christmas season

The Gleaner-sponsored Jamaica Epicurean Escape (JEE) is the perfect way for family and friends to kick off the Christmas season. This food extravaganza which will be held at the Richmond Estate, St Ann, on December 1 and 2, will provide a wide range of delectable dishes and exciting entertainment for all ages.

"The food will obviously be the centre of the festival as it is with any family celebration," notes Lorraine Fung, food consultant to the JEE as she gives as a glimpse of what to expect at Richmond Estate. "We have organised the festival to represent a variety of styles of cooking to satisfy every palate. The venue will be transformed to represent a village with different zones focussing on different types of cuisine.

The largest being the Out of Many zone which will feature Jamaican yard-style food such as: ackee and salt fish, stews, soups, seafood as well as fusion-style food presented especially by young chefs. The chefs will combine Jamaican favourites with the spices of other cultures, creating exciting new dishes that embody the Jamaican spirit of inclusion and sharing.

The Global Zone will give a taste of Indian, Chinese, Italian, Greek, African and more. For those who prefer not to have meat, the organic avenue features, vegetarian, vegan and raw organic food. And of course, there are the gourmet offerings; so there is something for everyone.

"While we have been highlighting top chefs and caterers so far, I am very proud that we are providing a platform for several young chefs who are embarking on their own businesses. They are: Kushite's Catering, Bellyful Deli, Gourmet Cookies; Chefsforlife, Homechefs Seasonings, Veggie Meals on Wheels, Café Africa, IsleChix and many more."

A number of student chefs are from The Human Employment and Resource Training/National Training Agency, the University of Technology School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Trinidad Culinary Institute.

It's not just about food as Maxine McDonnough, communications manager of the JEE says, "We have a full programme of activities to keep patrons busy for the entire day. There are a number of seminars, cooking demonstrations, cook-offs and interactive competitions in which patrons can participate.

Additionally, a group of talented Jamaican artists will be participating in an Artisan's Village where Jamaican artwork will be on sale at reasonable prices. Entertainment will be provided by drummers, dancers and singers.
