JADORE, RUNNING at odds of 12-1 with senior jockey Clive Lynch aboard, made most to win the circular nine feature for the Joseph Armond Memorial Cup (non-winners of two 3-y-os) in decisive fashion at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Owned by Milade Azan and trained by Richard Azan, the bay filly by Outrigger out of Courts Krissie won by 2 1/4 lengths from EARTHWINDANDWIRE (9-1) who just held on for second from the fast-finishing 7-5 favourite GALLAVANTER in a field of 12. The latter hurt his chances by running wide at the home turn under champion jockey-designate Omar Walker.
It was the well-backed HI-TECH (5-1) who made the early running from JADORE, EARTHWINDANDFIRE and highly fancied PRINCESS CUT with GALLAVANTER outpaced in the early stages.
JADORE assumed the lead from HI-TECH at the halfway stage, turned for home two lengths clear and found extra from below the distance to hold the rail-running EARTHWINDANDFIRE (Dane Nelson up) at bay to the line.
After being the bridesmaid for the most part in her first nine starts, JADORE came into her own with a narrow victory over the distance in maiden company on November 24 with Lynch astride. Despite stiffer opposition, she duly made it two in a row, looking every inch an improved filly.
Notable upsets
JADORE was one of three notable upsets on the 10-race programme. The others were FOX MAN at 13-1 in the third race over 1700 metres and STACK at 17-1 in the closing straight five race for bottom of the barrel claimers.
Ridden by in-form Devon A. Thomas for veteran trainer Sydney Watson, FOX MAN held on grimly to win in a three-way photo-finish from NAHIMA and the luckless favourite JCD SLEW in a field of five.
IN THE NICK OF TIME
In the closing race, STACKA, who was always prominent on the stands' side, got up in the nick of time to beat 9-1 chance ARCHANGEL (made most) by a short head. The 10-year-old horse was ridden by Robert Stewart for trainer Tyrone Prince.
Winning favourites were the lightly raced two-year-old colt SUPER DAVE (4-5 fav), who made all impressively in the opening race with five-time champion Winston Griffiths riding for 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny; Percy Hussey's ACCOMPONG (2-5), who completed the hat-trick in the fifth race over 1500 metres with Charles Hussey aboard, and the Enos Brown-trained SPACESAVER (3-2) under the apprentice Javour Simpson in the seventh for high claimers.
