Tribute to Ashenheim

THE EDITOR, Sir:

After Sir Neville Ashenheim was appointed Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States in the early 1960s, his son Richard succeeded him as legal adviser to the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ), the national body of professional journalists. He was unanimously elected.

Like his father, Richard served for many years until he retired. He gave his tremendous legal experience freely to the PAJ.

He was a stout defender of press freedom. During the greater part of the 18 years I was secretary of the PAJ, Richard played a major role on the executive, fighting for the preservation and enhancement of press freedom in Jamaica. He helped to frame the Code of Ethics of the PAJ.

At meetings of the executive committee he was an eloquent spokes-man on the laws of libel, defamation and contempt of court. My deepest condolences to his family.

May I suggest that his wife donate his rich athletics library to the JAAA and that a memorial service be held for him in Jamaica so that his countrymen can pay him tribute.

I am, etc.,

KEN CHAPLIN
