Recipe for social upheaval
The Editor, Sir:

The unfair distribution of the burden of the new tax package is a recipe for social upheaval. The middle class, the working poor and the pauperised members of this country are being asked to bear most of the burden of reducing the Budget deficit. This injustice is likely to fuel anger and resentment that can easily explode, given the volatile mix of political tribalism and ignorance.

Social instability will leave all of us worse off. Enlightened self-interest, therefore, dictates that immediate steps be taken to encourage the Government to review the tax package. A useful first step is for members of the economic elite to indicate their willingness to share the burden of economic adjustment.

I am, etc.,
