More than a navigator

The Garmin portable navigation device. Contributed

Whether you own a fleet of trucks, taxicabs or delivery vans, the Garmin GPS navigator can improve the efficiency of your business.

Available at the Jamaica Automobile Association (JAA), a subsidiary of Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), the Garmin GPS Navigator is supported by the JAMNAV database created by JAA's partner, the Mona GeoInformatics Institute at the University of the West Indies. This enables it to map the best routes to save fuel, cost and time.

"It's a great product," says Orville Hedge, who uses one in his delivery truck that transports groceries for his personal business. His work often takes him into rural Jamaica where the JAMNAV on-screen, real-time digital map shows its value. It carries all major Jamaican highways, arterial and residential roads, among other features.

"It helps me to get to where I need to go on time," he explains. Garmin utilises microwaves from orbiting satellites to identify locations.

"A host of critical points are loaded on the maps provided by JAMNAV," explains Emile Spence, JNBS executive in charge of the JAA. "The maps locate all police stations, hospitals and several restaurants, among other businesses; therefore; it's very comprehensive."

The device is able to "call out road names" to direct drivers and can automatically select the shortest route or choose alternative routes from the default setting. This makes it a useful tool to manage large fleets. In fact, JAMNAV provides a solution specifically for businesses.
