Recovery through taxation?
The Editor, Sir:

It seems increased taxation is a paradigm for the recovery of the Jamaican economy, the Golding administration would have us believe. It makes us wonder, what has happened to innovation and strategic planning? The Government can only come up with the same old policies that have led us to where we are in the first place. We need people who can come up with efficient and efficacious solutions to the problems we face.

Recently, the Government levied taxes on cellphones, cellphone calls and fuel, and now it is borrowing again from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). There is no clear strategy for how this 'new revenue' will be spent and the loan from the IMF is supposed to be used for mending the gap in the Budget. Why is this money being used to balance the Budget instead of for lucrative investments?

No more taxes

How does the Government intend to repay the loan to the IMF? By levying more taxes on the already impoverished consumer? Mr Prime Minister, we submit that we are in no position to pay more taxes.

We want a government that acts in the best interest of the people and the decisions it makes should be in line with the desires of the people. But at the moment, the Government seems out of touch with what is happening to the man in the street. It appears we are being made to pay for the failure of the Government to properly manage the country. I submit that the Government must be held accountable for toxic decisions and mismanagement of the country's affairs.

I am, etc.,
