Village aim to avoid relegation

Paul 'Tegat' Davis, who last Wednesday took over the post as head coach of Village United, said the aim right now is for his team to avoid relegation from the Digicel Premier League (DPL).

The former national striker, who since his return has guided the club to two draws, says he was asked to fill the post after coach Cassman Williams got ill recently; and with Village being the only team from western Jamaica in the competition, he plans to give it his all.

"The aim right now is to avoid relegation as the only western Jamaica team in the competition," said Davis, after his team's come-from-behind 2-2 draw with cellar dwellars August Town at the University of the West Indies Bowl last Sunday.

"I like what I see so far. I think it is a young, energetic and enthusiastic team which needs guidance and good management."

Sunday's game

In Sunday's game, Akeem Thenstead, in the fifth minute, and goalkeeper Devon Haughton through 38th minute penalty, netted for August. Cordel Simpson, in the 12th and Troy Smith, in time added, scored for Village who are currently second-from- bottom in the standings on 15 points. August Town have 12.

Davis, who is now in his third stint with the team, was the man responsible for their eventual promotion to big time football recently. However, after a fall out with the management of the club, he left.

He then returned last season when the team was steering relegation in the face and helped them to avoid the drop. However, things again went sour with him and the club's management over what was reported to be salary issues and he again left, leaving Williams to do the job.

"Coaches come and coaches go. It's a job like any other job. I don't know why the media in Jamaica always make a big deal about coaches moving from one club to another," Davis said.

Meanwhile, August Town coach, Calvert Fitzgerald, said he was disappointed at the fact that his team, for the second match running, missed out on what appeared to be three sure points.

"We should have gone six points in our last two games which would have taken us safely out of the relegation zone," said Fitzgerald, whose team had conceded an injury-time goal in their previous match. "We allowed Harbour View to score in the final minute and draw with us 1-1 and today (Sunday) is the same."
