Dixon at ease - Portmore GM says coach's job is safe

Dixon: "When you're not winning the obvious things are going to come ... "

Portmore United's stocks in the Digicel Premier League continue to take a beating, as their 0-1 loss on home turf at Ferdie Neita Park to Harbour View on Sunday made them the worst offensive unit in the 12-team championship race this season, having scored only 10 goals. Even bottom-place August Town have managed a goal better than the 2007 champions, who remain sixth on 21 points.

The win launched Harbour View to the top of the standings on 33 points. Dicoy Williams headed home a perfect cross from Jermaine Hue in the 31st minute to give the 'Stars of the East' the win.

Despite the continued lack of fluency this season and their unfavourable position in the standings, Portmore United's coach, Linval Dixon, pointed out that he's not feeling any real pressure about losing his job.

Safe at this moment

"I wouldn't say I'm feeling pressure. Of course, when you are not winning the obvious things are going to come - the coach is at fault or the coach's job is on the line. But we just have to dust ourselves off and work and hopefully we'll score some goals and win the next one," he added.

Trevin Nairne, general manager of Portmore United, says Dixon's job is safe at this moment.

"The coaches that we have right now have brought us a lot of success in the past but the slump that we are experiencing is certainly not due to coaching and so at the moment we are not even considering that (changing coaches)," Nairne said.

Commenting on their general problems, Dixon said: "It is more mental than anything else because the fitness is there, the physical toughness is there, but to put it (ball) in the back of the net isn't. We need to start winning, we need to get back that winning mentality and that's one of the things we are working on.

"One of the things that keeps on bugging us and killing us for the entire season is not scoring." Dixon added. "You see the chances that we get; we should put them away at this level but we are not doing it.

"The process still continues, we have to keep on digging in, keep on fighting. We are working on scoring goals but somehow we are not getting them."

Continuing, Dixon noted: "Our confidence level is a little bit down. One of the things I think is happening is we are so afraid of losing games, so we don't know how to win games, and that is one of the things that is beating us," Dixon stated.

Meanwhile, Harbour View's coach, Donovan Hayles, was happy with the win but believes it will be difficult from here onwards.

"Today (Sunday) is a good work-man's day and we knew we needed to win this game to get back on top of the league," Hayles said.

"Our next game is going to be very important because one of the things we have to know is that now that we have taken the lead it is going to be very difficult. So one has to take the next game in hand, we have to quickly forget this game and move on and try and get all three points in the next game," he added.
