Oklahoma (CMC):
Jamaican Jermaine Bridgmohan piloted three winners on Sunday's penultimate day of the 2009 Remington Park horse racing season and will formally become the track's new champion jockey next week Monday. Bridgmohan increased his tally of wins for the season to 79 after landing Sunday's third, sixth and eighth races. He now has 79 wins, 20 clear of closest challenger Clifton Berry (59) and the 21-year-old Spanish Town, St Catherine native, has six rides booked for Monday's season-ending card.
Ballack downplays title hopes
BERLIN (AP):
Germany captain Michael Ballack is downplaying the three-time champion's chances of winning the World Cup in South Africa next year. The Chelsea midfielder was quoted as telling Kicker magazine yesterday that "we lack at the moment the consistency and breadth in the squad for the title".
He added: "In friendly matches above all, we have performed too weakly to be able to say that we have the level and routine to beat all the others."
IAAF lists Thanou as winner
MONACO (AP):
The IAAF has amended its results to list disgraced Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou as winner of the 100 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has moved Thanou from second to first in its official results and lists Marion Jones as "DQ", or disqualified.
The IAAF acted after the International Olympic Committee last week reallocated the medals stripped from Jones for doping. The IOC declined to upgrade Thanou from silver to gold because she missed several drug tests before the 2004 Athens Games.
In the new IAAF results, there is an asterisk next to Thanou's name. A note at the bottom says: "Following a decision of the IOC, Thanou will not be awarded the gold medal but will retain her silver medal."
Anderson, Broad rule themselves out
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP):
James Anderson and Stuart Broad have decided not to make themselves available for next year's Indian Premier League to ensure they are as fresh as possible for England's defense of the Ashes starting in November. The management agency that represents the fast bowlers says they preferred to concentrate on the series in Australia rather than the lucrative Twenty20 tournament.
Sponsor sticks by Tiger
GENEVA (AP):
Swiss watch maker Tag Heuer said yesterday it will continue its association with Tiger Woods despite the golfer's alleged infidelities. Company spokeswoman Mariam Sylla said the sponsorship is unchanged because Woods remains the world's best golfer and Tag Heuer does not care about his private life.
"We will continue," Sylla told The Associated Press. "He's the best in his domain. We respect his performance in the sport," she said, adding that Woods' personal life is "not our business".
Tag Heuer's comment came a day after global consulting firm Accenture Ltd. became the first major sponsor to announce it was cutting ties with Woods.
Court suspends ban
BRUSSELS (AP):
A Belgian court has suspended the one-year bans handed to Belgian tennis players Yanina Wickmayer and Xavier Malisse for missing drug tests. Wickmayer and Malisse were suspended by a Belgian court on November 5 for missing three drug tests in violation of World Anti-Doping Agency rules. The International Tennis Federation imposed the bans worldwide.
