WESTERN BUREAU:

When combined, the contribution made by the 11 members of staff honoured by the Doctors Cave Beach Hotel last Friday night numbered 182 years of indelible service to the hospitality sector.

The resort, one of the oldest landmarks in Montego Bay, marked its 40th anniversary by paying tribute and bestowing honours and awards on the people who have kept the family names McGann and Evans alive in western Jamaica.

Formerly known as Gloucester House, Doctors Cave, which started operation in 1956 was renamed by Lolita Evans and her ex-husband, Pat McGann, when they took over the property 40 years ago.

Today, Doctors Cave Beach Hotel boasts one of the richest legacies on the Hip Strip, Gloucester Avenue, having surpassed some of its closest neighbours and is still standing like a beacon.

Now run by a son of the owners, Andre McGann, and General Manager Ted Simpson, Doctors Cave is one of the only resorts that has remained open on what was once the busy hotel strip.

Those who came out last Friday to celebrate the milestone achievement included Mayor of Montego Bay Charles Sinclair, executive director of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, Camille Needham, Jamaica Tourist Board's Norma Taylor and Clive Taffe, Sunquest Vacation's Karen Mills, Exclusive Holiday's Roxanne Smith, Charmaine McGann, Veda Sanai and a host of repeat guests.
