Davies' weak defence
THE EDITOR, Sir:

OMAR DAVIES' recent contributions to The Gleaner are indicative of how difficult it must be for the man who was at the centre of power for so long, with so little to show for it, to remove himself from public limelight and retire. Perhaps it is the sting of seeing his replacements do as badly as he did.

He spent his time challenging the dismissal/resignations of Robert Gregory, Colin Bullock, Derick Latibeaudiere and Hardley Lewin, among others. He noted their 120 years of service. My conclusion is that these gentlemen, all nearing retirement (like himself), represent a generation of leadership who have attempted to solve the problems of Jamaica, for decades, with limited results. Despite their efforts, our debt is frightening, our trade deficit ever widening, our inflation and crime spiralling, our infrastructure poorly maintained and our society highly undisciplined, under-educated and severely dysfunctional.

Time for a change

I posit that, notwithstanding their contribution, perhaps it is time for a change. However unfortunate their respective exits, we need new leadership with different thinking and other ideas. In my humble opinion, it would be difficult for them to do worse than their predecessors, the former minister of finance himself included.

I am, etc.,
